Ir a PlusMan

7g students are learning about verb constructions in Spanish, and according to Mrs. Nicksarlian, it's typically a concept the kids struggle with.  So the Spanish teachers came up with creative ways for them to learn them.

Students are learning "ir a + infinitive" which is a way for them to talk about future events. So, in English it's, to go to +infinitive.

Ex. I'm going to dance at the party....translated: Yo voy a bailar en la fiesta.

Ir is the voy part then you add a and then an infinitive.

Anyways, students watch a short movie about this concept and there is a superhero called Ir a Plus Man who flies in and tells people what they are going to do.

This is what Ir a Plusman looks like...at least to these 7g boys!

February 24, 2012

Welcome to the last Friday blog update for the month of February!

Before you do anything else, please go to the PTO link at the top of this page!!!

Beginning at the start of the 2012-13 school year, the District 96 middle schools will be moving to TRIMESTERS instead of our past practice of reporting out on quarters.  This is a move that I am in favor of and have been wanting to pursue for a couple of years.  Heather Friziellie (Twin Groves principal) and I proposed this change to the D96 Board of Education earlier this month and it was approved at the board meeting this past Tuesday.

Here are the major benefits of moving to Trimesters:

                Calendar alignment for grades K-8
Reporting periods better align to Parent-Teacher Conferences
Longer windows of time to instruct, assess, provide intervention/enrichment on learning targets before issuing grades (three 12-week terms instead of four 9-week terms)
Decreased number of summative (end of term) assessments
Alignment to Stevenson HIgh School, where each semester is made up of 3 terms

Parents and students have used our PowerSchool system effectively to keep up with their academic progress.  The rigor of our curriculum will not change.  The use of our time will be organized more efficiently to support students doing their work.  If you have any questions surrounding this change, feel free to contact me directly.

Here is something that has been on my mind for a while…Parents, please do not use your cellular device in the school zone.  The Lake County Sheriff has notified me that anyone driving and using their phone will be ticketed.  Another parking lot issue has come to my attention recently, students are walking up to Gilmer Road to be picked up by their parents.  This is a dangerous practice and I will be having students stay on the sidewalk here at school and not walk up to Gilmer Road.  Please come into the parking lot to pick up your student.

Last night, our band had an amazing performance in the Woodlawn gymnasium.  The Concert, Jazz and Symphonic Bands played a wide variety of challenging songs and entertained the crowd.  Great job to all of our band members and Mr. Craw!

From Mr. Murphy:

We had a great week here at Woodlawn.  Our Conference Champion 7g Boys Basketball Teams were recognized at the District 96 Board of Education Meeting on Tuesday night.  Our Scholastic Bowl split its first matches on Wednesday, and the Orchestra and Band musicians from Kildeer, Country Meadows, and Woodlawn played phenomenally this week, as well.  And finally with the help from some fresh snow, our Ski Club should have a great night skiing and snowboarding tonight.

Above, Mr. Duggan conducts the 6g Woodlawn Orchestra.

Mr. Duggan conducts the combined 7/8g Woodlawn Orchestra.

3rd-Quarter mid-term reports will be posted on PowerSchool by Wednesday, February 29.  Teachers will be contacting the parents of students who are not passing class at that time.  As always, if you have any questions about academic grades or classroom work habits, we encourage you to contact the teachers.

Quarter 3 Mid-Term Grade Reports

As has been our practice thus far this school year...

By Wednesday, February 29, Woodlawn teachers will personally begin contacting parents of students who are earning letter grades less than a C, or who have shown a pattern of behaviors that has caused a concern in the learning environment.  Additionally, in order to provide parents a clear snapshot of student progress, all student grades will be updated in PowerSchool by Wednesday, February 29

The Quarter 3 reporting period ends on Thursday, April 5, so we believe that providing an update on our struggling students during this upcoming week will afford students ample time to seek ways in which to improve upon their achievement- and for parents and teachers to increase their communication about students.  Teachers may contact parents via email or phone, depending upon your preference.  However, understanding that most everyone has quite a busy schedule, we request that parents confirm that they have received a voicemail or email, with a reply.  It is important to all of us at Woodlawn that our message is clear and productive.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact either Greg or me atggrana@kcsd96.org or cmurphy@kcsd96.org or at 847.353.8500.

Time is flying by here in February!

We took our Winter Maps in January and we put the results in the mail today.  When you get your results, you can compare them to the Fall Maps you received around first quarter report card time.  Obviously, we are looking for growth, but there are occasions where a student may be holding at the same score or even going down.  This piece of data will paint a picture of your student as we look at the entire school year.  There is an explanation of the scores in the letter, but if you ever have questions, please feel free to contact the school.

Last night was a special night here at Woodlawn.  Linda Rosen and our 6th, 7th & 8th grade Chorus members performed in our gymnasium.  The students did a great job.  We were fortunate because four of our members performed their solo routines which they will be singing at the state performance this weekend.  Good luck to each of our students.  Mrs. Rosen was given a standing ovation for her years of hard work and dedication to our music program.  As a long time admirer of our music program, it was well deserved.

On Thursday, we had four school board members take a tour of Woodlawn and check out some classrooms.  I thought it was great to have them in the building, taking an interest in our programs.  Their questions to me were around how we could make Woodlawn an ever better place for students to learn.

Remember, there is no school this Monday, February 20th!

Please visit the PTO website at the top of this page.

Going Back in Time

I'm currently looking outside at the enormous snowflakes that are drifting down, and as much as I was excited for the recent spring-like weather, I realize that it is in fact, still winter.  But that's OK, because there's all sorts of great stuff to do in the wintertime.  Tonight I'm looking forward to shoveling my driveway.  Maybe tomorrow I'll even be able to scrape ice from my windshield.  These are things that you just don't get to do during those boring balmy, sunny days of the summertime.  Keep that in mind as you pour yourself a glass of ice cold lemonade while wiping the sweat from your brow during the glorious months of summer.  You'll miss these days...HA!
*****************

Please be sure to view the PTO newsletter link at the top of this page.

Speaking of fun things to do during the winter... Tonight is another Ski Club trip to Alpine Valley Ski Resort.  Students who signed up will be leaving after school to spend the evening hitting the slopes.  A big thanks goes out to Ms. Tripp for helping to organize the night.  The next scheduled Ski Club outing is Friday, 2/24.  There are still plenty of opportunities to sign up for that fun night, so stay tuned for more information.
*****************

Welcome back to the 50s!  Mrs. Shannon and Mrs. Miller have begun studying the social and political themes of the 1950s, and to celebrate the era, students joined them by dressing up in period clothing.

*****************

Upcoming Events...
Parent Review meets on Monday night.  Mrs. Dahlem, Director of Student Services, and Mrs. Lechner, Assistant Director of Student Services, will present the District 96 plans of how Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is and will continue to be integrated into the Kindergarten through 8th grade academic settings.  Monday night's Parent Review session is a "bring-a-friend" night, so I hope you have the opportunity to join us.  If not, District 96 SEL plans will be presented at an open Community Night on March 13.

The premise of SEL is explicitly teaching students how to know themselves, work well with others and to make good decisions.  SEL is anchored by 5 competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.  The real-world connections of SEL are clear, and we look forward to seeing continued growth in this area.
*****************

We're looking forward to members of the School Board visiting Woodlawn next Thursday.  They will be on campus to celebrate the variety of innovative learning experiences that our teachers help facilitate.
*****************

We have a number of upcoming athletic and academic competitions scheduled at Woodlawn.  We hope you can come are root on our Wolves...
Monday, 2/13: Girls Volleyball
Tuesday, 2/14: Girls Volleyball
Thursday, 2/16: Girls Volleyball, Wrestling
Tuesday, 2/21: Girls Volleyball

FACS with Mrs. Woeckel
The 6th graders have been learning about child development and how each age brings a different level of cognitive and physical  abilities. They took this information and created  a project that evaluated one of their own childhood photos by identifying their emotional, intellectual, physical, social and  moral characteristics of that particular age.

The 7th and 8th graders are learning about textiles and how these materials fit into our world around us. The students researched various fibers and created  a web page that identified the characteristics, uses, history, care and processing of these fibers. After  they completed their research the students presented these web pages to the class. They did an outstanding job by creating links for additional information and embedding images into their work.

Wellness Department:

Physical education students are well into the volleyball unit.  After two days of skill warm up and rule instruction, the students are playing games and having fun.  The fitness area of focus for this health group is abdominal muscles and the curl up test.  Fitness interventions are focusing on strengthening the abdominal muscles and encouraging students to practice at home.  The next unit up will be electives were students get to choose their activities for the unit.

Group 1 returned to Health on January 20 for their second unit.  The 8th grade students are learning about Disease Prevention.  Students have chosen a topic and are working on an informational website using Google sites.  The 7th grade students are learning about Substance Abuse.  They are using Glogster to produce public service announcement posters informing viewers of the dangers of using drugs.  The 7th and 8th grade classes will also be covering the topic of Sexual Harassment.  Mrs. Franks and Ms. Tripp will be joining us and facilitating activities and discussion.  The 6th grade classes are learning about Growth and Development.  After covering basic body organization, we are now focusing on the changes and challenges of Adolescence.  All classes will be taking their Benchmarks on February 15 before returning to P.E. on February 20.

Tammy Franks

As most of you know, our students are being rewarded with "Pack Paws" from the staff for doing what is expected of them in the classroom, hallway, or the lunchroom.  They have the chance to redeem their Paws throughout the day for wearing a hat, sitting in the teacher's chair, sitting next to a friend, getting out of ZAP, $10 ITunes giftcard, etc.  Throughout the year we also hold raffles for the kids to participate in.  At lunch this past Friday, the students had an opportunity to put in their Paws for Chipotle burritos and Jamba Juice giftcards.  Today Amrit, Javier, Kamilla, Samantha, Danny, Ysabel, Jason, Logan, Max enjoyed their burritos at lunch.

If you want to be a part of the Woodlawn PACK Paw program, we would be grateful for any donations from our parents.  Some items that have been donated in the past include restaurant certificates, sports paraphenilia, ITunes giftcards, candy, movie passes, etc.

Keep up the good work Woodlawn students!
